The Center for Gay Self-Realization and Uranian Psychoanalysis

Education, Research and Practice of Gay Individuation and the Fostering of Homosexual Subjectivity

ABOUT THE CENTER

The Center for Gay Self-Realization is starting out as a seed concept for new gay activist organizing at this time, and its words hint at grand visions, suggesting perhaps an educational or spiritual institution that could incubate important gay psycho-spiritual ideas and generate practical programs designed to foster optimal personal development.

The core activists and supporters who are currently organizing around the Center concept as it may be, anticipate that the vision it represents will in the near future begin to manifest as an operational program.

In the meantime, the Center serves to help the above-mentioned longtime community of gay psychological activists and friends begin to focus on the next activist step in what is a very challenging effort: inter-relationally effectuating the maturational inner-work practice of subjective self-awareness as the essence of gay liberation.

Treeroots

The Center is being sponsored by Treeroots, a non-profit educational corporation formed in 1982 by two gay activists, Mitch Walker and Don Kilhefner. It is the latest in a progressive series of pioneering activist grassroots organizing projects in Los Angeles that have been developed and shepherded over the past four decades to address the better humanization and spiritualization of homosexual experience.

During this time, Treeroots has aimed, through the development of a gay-centered theory and practice, to facilitate the revolutionary, liberational actualization of this subjective humanity, its spirit and soul.

In furthering this aim practically, activist supporters and collaborators have come to emphasize facing unconscious psychological agendas which would seem ineluctably at play negatively in gay people and activist organizing.

To this end, Treeroots has sponsored many groups, workshops, personal instruction, actions, writings, videos and even a gay psychoanalytic institute (The Institute for Uranian Psychoanalysis), over the past four decades.

The history of this tradition and its ideas can be traced back to 1976, when the basis for such a gay soul psychology that drew on the archetypal ideas of C. G. Jung first appeared in the journal Spring, “The Double, an Archetypal Configuration” by Mitch Walker, which, along with many other articles and references, can be found in the library of this website.

The next important historical contribution was the experience derived through Mitch’s and Don’s co-founding of the Radical Faerie movement in the late 70s, along with Harry Hay, who himself was known for even earlier co-founding arguably the first successful gay organizing effort, the Mattachine Society, in 1950. Pertinently, Mitch and Don split from the Radical Faeries to form Treeroots because of the serious problems they saw resulting from the group’s anti-psychological attitude and unconscious dynamics led by Harry’s dominating style.

Treeroots’ operation and accompanying theory and practice have gone through several developmental phases since its founding, the most recent being the new Center’s formation following the dissolution in 2020 of the previous such project undertaken by Treeroots, the Institute for Uranian Psychoanalysis. That project involved a serious and elaborate training program which thrived for fifteen years.

The Center for Gay Self-realization, as an interface for Treeroots, presently looks forward to the day, expected to arrive soon, when it can renew further developing a remarkably rich and powerfully evolving body of thought, experience and momentum which is actually part of an ancient tradition, through creating and operating new participatory projects that advance psychological gay liberation and build commensurate grassroots activist community.

In the meantime, the monthly public Gay-Centered Inner Work Club as well as this informational website are the two main functions now associated with the new Center, proudly sponsored by Treeroots.
